Bring Back the Smile of the Sun

Feature Class

Why? Why are they rude towards the sun? They are angry when the sun is up and everything beneath him is hot. They are angry when the sun is hiding, every time it rains. They are angry when the sun is asleep, for they cannot wait for tomorrow to come. All the while, the sun tries to smile back at us, keeping us cheerful and bright. But lately, I’ve noticed that the sun isn’t happy, maybe it’s because everyone is so mean to him. Do they not know the story behind the sun’s smile? A person with a red cape approached me and told me of an old tale, a story about the smiling sun. The fact is, the sun we see today isn’t the same sun we’ll see tomorrow. In heaven, where our beloved are among the clouds, in peace and happiness, a selection is being done every day. One lucky departed soul will be chosen to be the sun for the day, to gaze upon the vastness of the land, and have a chance to see and observe their loved ones one more time. He’ll be sitting atop the skies, as his excitement and joy gives off this warm light. The reason why the sun is smiling is because the person on duty in a given day is happy to see his family again.

But people don’t know this fact. They curse the sun, without any idea that the current sun could probably be their loved one who passed away. Maybe that’s why the sun is sad. I don’t want the sun to be gloomy, for one day, my own parents could be out there staring back at me, and I’ll surely cherish that special day, for I’ll be embraced by their warmth once more.

After noticing how gloomy the sun looks, I picked up a lot of blank papers from my late dad's printing house. I run around the town, giving a piece of paper to everyone I come across with. I asked them to write on that paper anything that they wanted to tell to their loved ones whom are not with them anymore. At first they were hesitant to participate. I mean, it is a weird request coming from a stranger like me. But it didn't took long and the town's people started to open up, how much they miss their departed loved ones. Thus, they wrote on the paper what I can say is the sweetest yet saddest things a person can express. Afterwards, I collected the letters. This time, it's my turn to work. I remember that I once flew a giant kite with a smiling face. I think it was way back when we celebrated a festival, so that everyone who'll see the smiling kite, would be happy too. Thus, I looked for it, and there it was, stuck on top of a tower. I know how dangerous it was to climb that tower, but I'm determined to make the sun smile again. I picked the kite up. It seems it isn't damaged. I attached all the letters of the town's people into the kite and slowly flew it as the wind carried it higher and higher. I’m hoping that like a smiling mask, the kite would bring back the smile he once lost. Also, with so many wonderful messages on the kite for the sun to read, I bet he'd feel happy again. Maybe, just maybe, mom and dad could be reading my own letter right now. One day, when I grow up, I’ll tell this story to the town’s people. That time they will finally listen and believe me instead of laughing….I mean my story isn’t silly, is it?

Everyone will learn to appreciate the sun’s smile. I dream that when the day feels dull and gloomy, people will work together to bring back the smile of the sun. How about you…do you believe my story?

How did I miss this one? It is a beautiful artwork, with a beautiful story. There is a lot of movement and freedom in the pose -- reminds me of something trying to take flight.
