That of which is blank, that of which is white and untarnished, that of which is clean is called negative, the irony in art. How we find a portion in the canvas which doesn’t contain the colors of our concept to be bad, yes, that lonely spot that is devoid of our inspiration. The space that surrounds our main subject which looks as if it is ready to swallow every color lying in our canvas, suggesting that the colors splattered on the canvas are but just an unwanted blemish to the purity of the canvas. But, isn’t it somewhat a fact, that some colors in a certain canvas isn’t an art at all? Wouldn’t that make the colorful subject itself be the negative space and not the white background? How that blank space tries to put focus on your art, yet if that art in itself is not worth the gaze, then the real negative space here is the subject. How most of us believe that art is all about aesthetics, of preference and what is beauty to certain eyes. If so, there’s no such this as a “Nonartistic” piece, for there is no piece that is not appreciated.

Thus, we may see a particular artwork ugly and prefer another, but that’s the “negative space” within us, that void which rejects the colors of those we don’t like, and the canvas that welcomes the colors that we are familiar with. Negative space is the part that completes the whole, how lifeless it may be, its lack of colors glorifies our subject even more, how unpleasant this artwork may be.
